Project Zomboid server hosting questions

Who runs this site?

GamezServers runs it. When you order, you pay at the GamezServers checkout and manage the server from the GamezServers dashboard.

Does every player need to own Project Zomboid?

Yes. Each person needs their own copy on Steam, and it has to be on the same build as the server.

Which build does a new server run?

Build 42, the stable branch since 29 July 2026. Choose the Build 41 (legacy) server type if your group is still playing a Build 41 world.

Can I carry a Build 41 world over to Build 42?

No. Build 41 saves do not load on Build 42. Keep that world on the Build 41 type, or begin a new one on Build 42.

Can I upload a world I already have?

Yes, if it was made on the same build as the server. Stop the server, upload the world folder and its settings files into the matching folders under .cache, set Save name to the world's name and start it. Our [save moving guide](/guides/move-project-zomboid-save-to-dedicated-server) has the details.

Where do I change zombie numbers and loot?

In the _SandboxVars.lua file in .cache/Server, named after your save name. Stop the server, edit it in the file manager and start it again. New values mostly show in places nobody has explored yet.

How do I get admin rights?

The server makes an admin account on its first start, and the login is in your server settings. You can also press Make admin to promote your own account.

Does the server update itself?

Yes. It checks Steam for a new version each time it starts, so restart it after a game patch and it will match your players again.

A mod updated and now nobody can join. What do I do?

Restart the server. Players get a Workshop update straight away, but the server keeps the old copy until it restarts. The Check mod updates button tells you when that has happened.

What does Save name do?

It names the world and its settings files. Use letters and numbers only. Changing it starts a separate world, and the old one stays on disk.

Does the server stay on when we log off?

Yes. By default the game clock pauses while nobody is on. After 4 days with nobody on, it saves and sleeps, and anyone with access can start it again from the dashboard in one click.

Can I add a voice server?

Yes. Checkout offers a Mumble voice server with your Zomboid server. It is free for 30 days, then renews at its own monthly price until you cancel it.

What is the refund rule?

If you are new to GamezServers, email support within the first 10% of the period you paid for, 72 hours on a monthly plan, for a full refund of that first payment. The server and its files are deleted when we refund.
